How to resize an image for YouTube

Crop, Fit or Stretch: which should you use?
Crop fills the whole frame and trims whatever sticks out. It’s the best choice for photos and most thumbnails — just keep faces and text near the middle of your picture so they aren’t cut off.
Fit keeps the entire picture visible and fills the leftover space with a background color. Use it for logos, screenshots or square images that must not lose any edges.
Stretch forces the picture to the exact size without keeping its proportions. Only use it when your image is already close to 16:9, otherwise people and text will look squashed.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube thumbnails use a 16:9 aspect ratio and must be at least 640 pixels wide. 1280 × 720 — the size this tool creates — is the classic thumbnail size, and YouTube now accepts thumbnails as large as 3840 × 2160 (4K). Upload them as JPG or PNG.
What is the file size limit for a YouTube thumbnail?
Up to 50 MB when you upload from a computer, but only 2 MB from the YouTube mobile app. Thumbnails made here are JPG files, which at 1280 × 720 are normally well under 2 MB, so they work from any device.
What size is YouTube channel art or a channel banner?
Upload banners at 2560 × 1440 pixels (the minimum is 2048 × 1152) and keep the file under 6 MB. YouTube crops the banner differently on TV, desktop and mobile, so keep text and logos inside the central safe area — 1235 × 338 pixels at the minimum size.
